Tony Leung Leaves "Battle of Red Cliffs" 2007-03-06 15:58:06 CRIENGLISH.com Tony Leung (right) and Takeshi Kaneshiro are seen in this undated photo. Tony Leung has decided to step back from the lead of John Woo's "Battle of Red Cliffs," while Takeshi Kaneshiro will take on the role. [File Photo: ent.sina.com.cn/on.cc] Fans of Hong Kong actor Tony Leung won't be able to see him in the upcoming "Battle of Red Cliffs," or "Chi Bi," as the star has decided to step back from the lead in the film. Chinese web portal Sina.com says the film's director John Woo confirmed the Cannes Best Actor winner gave up playing Zhu-Ge Liang, a legendary military strategist in the ancient Three Kingdoms period, in the film. Tony Leung has reportedly said the plot was attractive, but the six-month-long shoot was longer than he expected. Rumors say the star may take the break to concentrate on his relationship with fellow actress Carina Lau. Some suspect he wants to take a rest after finishing shooting Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution." No comments were available from Tony Leung's agent. In the wake of the star's withdrawal, heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro has been confirmed to take on the role and join the star-heavy cast, including Chow Yun-Fat, Taiwan supermodel Chiling Lin, and mainland actress Vicki Zhao. "Battle of Red Cliffs" will begin shooting later this month, and is slated to premiere next year english.cri.cn/3086/2007/03/06/1261@202471.htm

Apparently, Takeshi will be playing Zhuge Liang.
OOHH!! Chow Yun Fat as Zhou Yu!!
I wonder when it'll take place exactly. Like, will Cao Cao's sons be around? I wanna see Cao Pi.
No, I wasn't "OMG!! A DYNASTY WARRIORS/ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS MOVIE!!" as I know that the games, Dynasty Warriors and Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, feature characters that were around during that time in Chinese history.
;D

More information on "The Battle of Red Cliff" "Battle of Red Cliff" Split in Two 2007-02-12 21:31:37 CRIENGLISH.com Asian moviegoers can expect to catch an exclusive version of John Woo's next big blockbuster "The Battle of Red Cliff," which is set to release in two segments. Beijing Youth Daily reported Patrick Wachsberger, president and CEO of Summit Entertainment which holds the film's rights outside Asia and North America, revealed the possibility of two editions. Producer Terence Chang explained the film is based on events during the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China, which is well known among Asian audiences. He said there is "too much difficulty to condense all the stuff into two hours" and splitting the film will "allow more room for character development." Each part will last two hours, making the Asian version a four-hour epic, while the release outside Asia will be two and a half hours. The project was reported to have just secured more investment to a total of US$75 million. Veteran actors Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung are among the star-studded cast. The film is scheduled to start shooting in March, with the first episode being screened next summer and the second in late 2008. english.cri.cn/3086/2007/02/12/1261@195571.htm

english.people.com.cn/200407/28/images/0727_866.jpg [/img] Hong Kong star Tony Leung Chiu Wai will return to the entourage of war epic "The Battle of Red Cliff" to star as Zhou Yu. [Photo: sina.com] It seems the story behind John Woo's new big budget epic, "The Battle of Red Cliff," is as flexible as the movie itself. Less than a week after it started shooting, it experienced the drop-out of big star Chow Yun-fat. Now, another big star, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, has returned. Web portal sina.com quoted a source from the film producer, Zhang Jiazheng, as saying that Tony Leung has agreed to return to the movie. This time, the actor will star as Zhou Yu instead of the role of Zhu Geliang, which he quit before. Zhang said the return of Tony Leung made them excited. They are now expecting him for the upcoming cooperation, though a formal contract has not yet been signed. They assure the changes won't affect the shooting of the film. Chow Yun-Fat, who was invited to play Zhou Yu, was dropped from the star-studded cast just one day after filming started. The production team alleged Chow put forward "nearly 100 unreasonable demands" which they said "they are unable to tolerate." They also alleged Chow Yun-Fat is "far beyond the age of his role in the film" and they had received what they called "negative feedback from the public on that point." Earlier last month, Tony Leung announced he would step back from his original role as Zhu Geliang. The star said he quit because of the six-month-long shoot and his bad Mandarin. Rumors had suggested the star was taking a break to concentrate on his relationship with fellow actress Carina Lau. In the wake of Leung's withdrawal, the production team had confirmed heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro would take on the role of Zhu Geliang. Shi Dongming from the entourage said the return of Leung wouldn't affect the original decision. Shi says that Zhou Yu and Zhu Geliang are the two eye-catching characters in the movie. In the famous legend, Zhu Geliang was a brilliant military strategist in the ancient Three Kingdoms period, while Zhu Yu was an excellent general for his opponent. In the screenplay, there are many plots to narrate their relationship. english.cri.cn/3086/2007/04/19/63@217968.htm

Yeah Tony is returning And "Battle of Red Cliffs" is not going to be anything like the Dynasty Warriors game. John Woo said they're trying to make it more historically accurate rather than a kungfu movie. There will be lots of war scenes though. If you want Dynasty Warriors-like, the other movie with Andy Lau & Maggie Q called "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon" may be more your thing. Expect it to be more flashy and perhaps 'cool' but "Battle of Red Cliffs" has more depth and meaning

Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms are set during the same time frame. The DW games aren't historically accurate, as Cao Pi wasn't THAT evil. In the games, KOEI changed Zhen Luo's name to Zhen Ji, who married Cao Pi, which, in turn, will make one and all go "what?" In the games (he's only been in one so far), he's self-centred and he's not a poet. Considering the time frame of the movie, I doubt Cao Pi or his family will be introduced. Mentioned, possibly? Wishful thinking. And if Cao Pi WERE in the movie, I say get an actor who looks like THIS: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cao_Pi#Modern_references;D

Okay, I had to read a little more about the characters they were playing. I kind of got confused hehe. ^^; But yeah overall it sounds interesting. I like the fact that they brang Tony Leung back too. Takeshi with his beard, moustache, and some long hair. Bring it! Lol. ;D

It appears that when Tony and Takeshi-san star in a movie together, it ends up being very good. I know a bit about the history of the 3 kingdoms so should be very interesting on the big silver screen. HOWEVER, why is it that the movie release is cut down from 4 hours to 2 and a half?? Yeah it's long but if the movie is great (think "Dances with Wolves - unedited version) audiences WILL stay and watch it. Grrrrr.....

Considering how long the series is, it could be a series of movies based on the history of the Three Kingdoms? Romance of the Three Kingdoms the video game series is up to 11 right now so that's what could happen. So if it were to be a series, maybe Cao Pi will be featured in the future? Cao Cao will be a HUGE focus in the movie. But if it's only one movie, I'll go see it. So even though Woo is basing the movie off of more accurate historical references, it'll be almost like a video game-to big screen feature. Key word: almost. But not quite exactly. I guess it'll be close enough? Yes I am a nerd, a geek. Thank you. ;D HA!! Liu Bei.
