This link was posted on the Creme d'asie forum where TK reflects on who he is: tk-chobi.web.infoseek.co.jp/media-t/media.htmOnce you open up, go to the one on the bottom. Even though he's supposed to be only 1/4 Japanese, he regards himself as Japanese but born in Taiwan. Unfortunately, he doesn't acknowledge his other heritage. Is this because he lives in a much more patriarchal society where one identifies strongly with the father's side of the family?

I have a weird question about TK's nationality. What is his mother tongue? Does he speak Japanese with a Chinese accent or Chinese with a Japanese accent? When I watched HOFD I thought he was a Japanese actor playing a Chinese character because of his name during the credits and because to me he looks mainly Japanese to me. Do Chinese and Japanese people really look any different or am I being weird for thinking someone "looks" Japanese?

I have a weird question about TK's nationality. What is his mother tongue? i might get corrected on this, but i think his mother tongue is taiwanese, with mandarin coming in second. then japanese, then cantonese, then english.

Hey every1! I'm zach and i'm new to this message board thing (probably the only guy on here ) and still trying to figure out how it works ...i posted a message on an earlier thread but the last reply dated back at march so i didn't think i would get any replies there so i posted on a more recent one. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of Takeshi Kaneshiro, or at least started to be these past few weeks and enjoy his works and also think, out of all the asians I've seen in my lifetime has got to be the most goodlooking male asian out there! TK's asian mixture makes him look really appealing... props to the ASIANs! This dood can turn straight people gay! lol j/k hehe to bad he's not a tad bit Filipino like me. haha, to share some commonalities. but yeah. great stuff. It's kinda upsetting he's not really big in the U.S. but I guess it's okay in a way... so i guess that's it, i look forward to meeting the kaneshiro fans of the world!

Hey every1! I'm zach and i'm new to this message board thing... Hi again, Zach, and welcome here! You may have already noticed that I replied to you back on that other, older thread where you posted. It took me a while to get used to navigating around this whole msg. board. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it real soon, if you haven't already. Enjoy the fandom world of TK!

French/Irish Canadian here. I have no Asian in me whatsoever. Wish I did. I don't think I have Hispanic in me but I have Native in my blood, so I COULD have some Hispanic in me as well.
Methinks I'm the only Canadian (so far) on here.

i'm plain ol' white american. a mix of german and scotch-irish, with some native indian way back before my great-grandmother. really dull. i think this is why i love other cultures so much, because i don't feel like i have one myself so i sort of live vicariously through others. well, whatever it takes!

Hey there Zach! Welcome to the forum. I'm predominately African-American with some Irish and Native American thrown in for good measure. Not sure where my affinity for Asian cinema came from since we don't have a whole lot of exposure to it here in the US (at least not outside of New York or L.A.). Something about it just clicks for me. As someone said in another section of this forum sometimes you just like what you like.

Well, I'm American with English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, and German ancestry. My father immigrated to the States from England when he was a young teenager. I too have always been fascinated with Asian cultures, even though I admittedly don't claim to know a whole lot about any particular one. It would be nice if more Asian films were distributed here in the U.S., and I don't mean just martial arts action ones, but the whole array of what Asia produces, which I'm sure is *a lot*. I really like it how TK has done a variety of films and seems determined to not be in just one or two film genres over and over again. I think that's the mark of a real, committed artist. Oh, TickTake, I believe that I'm the one who initially said something about simply liking what one likes, but OleWiseOne then said it as well-- as did Veronica too, I believe.

The simplicity of the statement is it's brilliance! Sometimes it's best not to over analyze and just go with the flow. Couldn't agree with you more Swellboy about TK and his role selection. It makes you anticipate seeing what he'll do next. I love how I can see TK in "Fallen Angels" and "HOFD" and say, "Is this reallythe same guy?"The man's got unbelieveable range as a performer.

Is this because he lives in a much more patriarchal society where one identifies strongly with the father's side of the family? His more recent interviews (incl. the CNN one), he clearly states that he does not consider himself Japanese or Taiwanese/Chinese. He always says he doesn't feel like any one, although he does claim to be very comfortable around other Taiwanese. And I'm not sure if this 1/4 Japanese business is true...is it? I read an interview from him where he states that he is 1/4 Okinawan, but maybe his dad's other half is just Japanese? I've no idea...so if anyone can clear this up for me, it'd be great. And his mother most likely has ancestry from Fujian (considering his mother tongue was Hokkien, i.e. Taiwanese).

Insofar, I've heard him refer to himself as Japanese twice. He's an exotic Asian mix. Me like.

I've heard him say he was Japanese too. I think he says it in a commercial or interview he made. I think he mus think he is Japanese but right now alot of his work is in Hong Kong/China and they can be somewhat anti-Japanese. Also, he has had a chance to live in Japan for several years now and they don't really consider him to be a Japanese. Wonder if he is rethinking that whole "I'm a Japanese" thing.
I think he considers himself to be Japanese because his father is Japanese.

To settle it: he is Takeshi Kaneshiro, a human being.
