The movie Sleepless Town comes highly recommended and its star, Takeshi Kaneshiro, even more so. Thus he's chosen as the subject of our scrutiny for this week, just so we leave our warm beds for a while.
The actor-cum-singer who lives in Taipei is also gaining popularity fast outside Hong Kong and his homeland. He is a household name in Japan where he can currently be seen in many advertisements, giving those Hollywood stars much needed competition, and has a starring role in one of their TV series.
His phenomenonal career in the land of the rising sun is quite expected--Japanese blood obiously runs in his veins. His dad is Japanese and his mom Taiwanese. Once upon a time, and this means when Kaneshiro was still quite a young 'un, his school-mates at a public school in Taiwan made fun of his name and his mixed looks. So he enrolled in an American school in Taiwan and is now able to speak Mandarin like a scholar, tackle Japanese like it is his first language, converse in Cantonese with a "gorgeous accent" and, of course, English is not a problem. Wonder where the bullies are now, while Kaneshiro is laughing all the way to the bank, eh? And with girls hanging onto his shirt sleeves, too ....
Of course, it doesn't hurt his career that the man is very good-looking. He stands tall at 178cm (5' 11") and came into the world on Oct 11, 1973. However, it has to be said that looking through all those pictures in the Net, he is one of those guys who ages like wine. You know, he'll taste ... er, look better as the years pile on him and he slowly loses those yucky boyish-girlish looks.
While it is true that he is not at all an ill-reputed actor, generating a minimum of four movies a year, almost all of his sites feature pictures of him and the facts found are recycled like some sort of mantra. You know, stuff like his star (Libra), his family (mom, dad, grandma, two siblings and a dog), his Chinese name (Gum Sing-Mo), his nickname (Aniki), his favourite actors (Andy Lau, Chow Yun-Fat and--phooey!--Michael Douglas), blah, blah, blah ....
We're not really sure what goes down in the sites created by Kaneshiro's Chinese and Japanese fans because while we're Net-savvy, we're not multi-lingual like Kaneshiro. For example, we tried accessing Takeshi Kaneshiro: What a Guy
(http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Pagoda/6562), a page in Chinese, and opening the buttons blindly got us nowhere except we were quite fascinated with the cute animated animals that popped up at every new page.
Seriously though, the first site one should check out is Mangaart.com (http://www.mangaart.com/takeshi/) where one can send Kaneshiro-based postcards to friends and family. Also featured are Kaneshiro's album titles and the list of his songs--some of which, if we may add, might sound good in Chinese but are hilarious after translation. His 1995 album, Secretly Drunk, has songs titled Don't Cry Behind My Back, Lonely People Are Most Afraid to Shed Tears and Love Burns in the Summer. In the album Always Willing, he sings The She I Love Has Your Shadow. Some translator has definitely done no justice to the titles here.
Another good site to enter is Takeshi Kaneshiro's Unofficial Fanbase (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Flats/3619/) which features good layout and interesting pieces of Kaneshiro's filmography. According to the webmaster, he is best known for "his lovable eyebrows and the quote from Chungking Express that made him famous." If you don't already know, the quote is: "Do you like pineapples?" and it is somehow connected with his character's girlfriend--that's all we'll reveal. This fan base also has the synopses to some of his movies like Executioner, Too Tired to Die (with Mira Sorvino) and Mermaid Got Married. From this site, you can access the Takeshi Kaneshiro Webring.
Takeshi Mania (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Temple/2962) also has the same concept and gives more links. The only problem is not all the link-sites can be opened. Some are forbidden (ahem!) and others throw up that irritating "CSM Proxy Server Error" crap. (By the way, the man has been photographed only once or twice without a shirt in the kosher sites--modest, eh?)
For picture-based profile check out The Kaneshi Shrine (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Garden/3003/TKpix.html) which has three extensive galleries. For non-picture-based sites try News Reports Mentioning Takeshi Kaneshiro (http://egret0.standford.edu/cgi-bin/hknews.gum-sm) and Welcome to Takeshi Kaneshiro Page (http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Library/6403/Takeshi.htm).
So, there. The end. We're going back to bed.
