Synopsis: Lost and Found follows the story of a young woman named Lam (Kelly Chen), who has leukemia and is on a journey for reconciliation with her unfair destiny. Despite her illness Lam insists on working for her rich father who owns commercial ships. She meets and becomes attracted to a half-Scottish sailor named Tak (Michael Wong). When Tak disappears, she hires a lost-and-found agency run by Joh Hau Chung (Takeshi Kaneshiro) to find Tak. As she spends time with Hau Chung, she starts to look at life differently even though her disease is worsening by the day. --- Lam (Kelly Chen) bumps into That Worm (Takeshi Kaneshiro who plays a man of Mongolian descent. His name translates to That Worm in Cantonese) on the street and he turns out to be the man she's looking for. The man who can help her find someone she lost. That Worm runs a Lost and Found business and Lam is looking for Scottish sailor Ted (Michael Wong). In a flashback we see Lam being diagnosed with leukemia and how she later experiences something magical meeting Ted at her dad's shipping company. First she doubts that the slightly eccentric That Worm can achieve anything but soon the two catches up with Ted who is about to go back to Scotland. Lam decides to stay in Hong Kong for a little while more before going on the journey that will take her to the edge of the world (as Ted describes a particular place in the highlands). She continues to stay with That Worm and work for his business. Working along side him she gets to experience the magic of regaining hope...

Just saw this film recently in the hopes of finding a gem as other TK films I've seen have been rather disappointing, the exceptions being Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and HOFD. The start was promising w/ black & white footage and the mournful voice of Leonard Cohen, chanteur and poet of loneliness, longing & lost hope ... Your expectations are raised ... and then the COLD SHOWER.
Overall, the film wasn't that bad in terms of narrative, plot & character development etc. when compared to some of TK's other films. However, Kelly Chan is so wooden she makes TK's other leading actress G. Leung seem like a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. There are holes in the storyline - when does The Worm realize she's the one and vice versa, are some key scenes missing? And the ending was so hackneyed, baby and all.
TK has been called the Asian Johnny Depp but a more appropriate comparison may be Antonio Bandaras - both had promising starts with critically acclaimed directors (TK w/ Wong Kar Wai and Bandaras w/ Almodovar) and then commercial success with a string of mediocre films.
Bandaras has since fallen off the radar. Let's hope TK picks better film projects in the future and doesn't commit career suicide (apparently he turned down Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon! What was he thinking?). Such a contrast to his HOFD co-star Zhang Ziyi who has gone from strength to strength in her choice of roles and directors she's worked with.

I was thinking of the same thing -- making comparison of TK with Bandaras. I have a feeling, though, that TK will stay in Asia and not make much inroads into Hollywood. As to Ziyi, Hollywood loves her, and she has the "Memoirs" movie coming up. And if it does really well at the box office (which I'm definitely going to see the minute it comes out), then who knows how far her career in Hollywood will go, though, granted, Asian actors/actress don't have much career longevity in Hollywood.

Based on TK's comments in various interviews, he's happy in Asia and is intelligent enough to realize that there aren't many interesting, multi-textured roles for Asian actors in Hollywood. Seems like the only ones available are based on the usual stereotypes (see article on American media perceptions of Asian males - www.asianguy.com/articles/copenhagen.html). Besides, Hollywood wouldn't know what to do with him. It is so bereft of imagination, creativity and fresh ideas, it constantly has to steal ideas and remake films from other countries (case in point: Infernal Affairs is being remade by Scorsese and diCaprio) Second, the best films these days are indie productions. Be interesting if TK were to hook up with Almodovar or Tarantino. And third, all the more interesting films seem to be coming out of Iran and Asia these days (see New York Times article "Glamour Lives, in Chinese Films" by Manohla Dargis. You can access the article via the monkey peaches website (www.monkeypeaches.com). It has a number of articles on Hollywood's abysmal treatment of Asian films and actors. Will post info once I find the ones I specifically have in mind.

I like this movie. Yes Kelly Chen was totally wooden in it (it was her second movie) and she hasn't really improved much over the years... Anyway, I thought Takeshi was good in "Lost and Found"... just this simple guy and he was cute. hehe.
Plus they went to Scotland!! It's one of my favorite places. It's an odd choice eh? I know. How many Chinese movies feature Scotland man... not a whole lot. I like the tone of this movie.. it's sad and I think it's good to open and end the movie with that song.
