It left me feeling sad.....especially with the last scene of her looking at the pictures TK took when he was forelorn and missing her- it broke my heart. That part really got to me too. Made me want to cry. I tried to get my girlfriend to watch this movie but she's too lazy to read subtitles. Gosh! It's like I'm more into romance movies then she is. Oh well she's missing out. I like the ending. If he ended up with Sheo Rou at the end of couse I would feel happy for him, but the ending of this movie was more effective. The ending made me feel the pain that Takeshi's character went through. Not every movie needs a happy hollywood movie type ending. I don't know about you guys but I think Takeshi looks awsome in those late 70's/early 80's style clothing in this movie.

Samanosuke I so agree with you-you did feel the anguish of TK's character at the end of the movie- it's the lasting feeling you are left with... you just picture him lying on the roof pining away for his lost love.. it puts a pit in my stomach just thinking about it.
And yes, TK looks groovy in his 70's/80's clothes- but in all fairness, he looks great in just about anything!!

i was so impressed by this movie. I think it was possibly one of the most realistic and naturalistic portraits of first, teenage love i've seen on film. It was so well made and i think the viewer is drawn in to really believe in these characters and their emotions and predicaments. To be honest, it bought back alot from my own teenage years! hehe. The scene in which Sheo Rou found all of the photos that TKs character had taken over the years at each and every moment when he missed her - and captioned them as such, was so touching and poigiant. Definately far and away my favourite scene; i liked to hear that it was TKs favourite as well TK acted superbly in this one. As someone said earlier, the way he conveyed the quiet anguish inside his character was really something (and yeh, he did look mighty fine in those grungy clothes yum!) i really loved this film actually - it's rare to see a film that brims with such raw and real emotion and somehow captures so exactly and poigniantly both the carefree and hedonisitc passion of the teenagers and later the deeper, more complex and pragmatic feelings bound up in love in later life. Very touching and wonderful... but damn, it sure has got some heavy love scenes!

Oh you're so lucky Samanosuke! I just watched this movie 2 days ago with a friend and like many who have wrote here, was just SO sad! There was such a heaviness and ache in my chest as Gigi's character looked through all those pictures of the sky Takeshi-san's character took over the years. My friend and I got into an interesting discussion after watching this. We were sad they didn't end up together and figured hey, in their next lives they'll get it right and live happily together. 'Till then, their spirits will continue to search out for one another

i have a question about the movie... maybe i was missing something, and i will see it again... but what was the reason for tk not wanting to pass the college exams? was it because he didn't think he was in love with her? did he want to explore his life apart from her? or did he do it to appease the mother? i'm not sure... your opinions mean a lot! thank u

He not waiting to pass the exam because he knew he failed!!
He just made up the answers during the exam because his mind was full of thinking; he missed G so much and could not concentrate. He actually loves her from the beginning till last even though he will marry again. He seriously asks G to keep in touch, do give him a fax if no time to phone in the airport…very sentimental!!
I cry every times I watch this film or even think about the story!!! Of course only as attractive as Takeshi be the character could made you have that kind of feelings

This is one of my favorite TK movies, but I'm on the fence about the ending. You're rooting for TK so bad when he's talking to her mother, and it just kills me when she says no. How many times does fate give you a second chance with your first love? You have take the chance when you get it. On the other hand, does she already know for certain that she doesn't love him anymore? It's probably more realistic, but SO unfair!!!

Til this day this movie is still my favorite. It brings tears to my eyes to see Takeshi in so much pain.

I had a big problem with the way this movie ended. Sure, it may have ultimately been more realistic, and usually I prefer realism, but this is one of those movies where you end up just wanting to see the characters end up together in the end. It was like the book "Little Women" in that respect, where you just get annoyed over and over that Jo and Laurie didn't end up together.
