First Love - The Litter on the Breeze

This is a strange movie and is difficult to describe. But as a TK fan it is a MUST SEE!Synopsis: Two tales of first love: before and after. Before: Takeshi Kaneshiro is a shy boy who enjoys being a garbage collector on night shift, a time in which he can have the whole street to himself. He cannot recall how the whole thing happened, but one night he finds himself watching the teenage sleepwalker Li Wei-Wei, and he realizes he wants to keep seeing her. He doesn't understand that this is love. The world of a clear-minded boy and the world of a sleepwalker girl begin to merge. The girl soon wakes up from her sleepwalking, and wants to know everything about those hours. Meanwhile, the boy is enjoying himself so much he can no longer tell dreaming from being awake. After: Karen Mok is the lonely woman who dominates the heart of Eric Kot. The two have been lovers, a very passionate first love. The sort of love that marks you with an aftermath that you won't begin to understand until long after it happens. Eric used to think he got over that love. He got married. It isn't until he sees Karen one day that he senses something is wrong. The precision of the pain makes him wince, in a part of himself he thought he had long ago cut off and thrown away. Between their past and present, a man and a woman struggle to find an end to their first love. Taken from pokerindustries.com ----- The debut feature from comic Eric Kot is both trying and tender. Using a bizarre narrative format, he tells two stories that ruminate on first love. Actually appearing onscreen as Eric Kot, he discusses the genesis of the project and illustrates his initial, ultimately rejected storylines. He eventually settles on the story of a mentally damaged garbage man (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who befriends and falls for a sleepwalker (lovely newcomer Lee Wai-Wai). Every night he guides her in her evening travels, and the strange twosome’s burgeoning affection is shown in a decidedly quirky, yet still affecting manner. The second story is portrayed by Eric Kot, who plays a married grocer who runs into his first love 10 years after he left her at the altar. He even took the wedding ring and gave it to his current wife (Madam Nancy). His first love is played by Karen Mok, in another of her disciplined, layered performances. Ultimately both stories manage to find moments that echo the emotional poetry of the film’s producer, HK’s number one auteur Wong Kar-Wai (Dir: Chung King Express, Mood for Love). Eric Kot introduces, comments, and cuts in whenever he feels like it, leading to lots of jump cuts and moments of sheer wackiness. He even comments on his own editing and Christopher Doyle’s lush camerawork. The effect is ultimately jarring. It provides insight but is far too intrusive; this is director’s commentary without an “off” switch. Still, the film has some creative moments. Doyle’s cinematography is stellar, and Kaneshiro and Mok do some fine work. This is a flawed, unpolished gem, but a gem nonetheless. Taken From lovehkfilm.com

This movie is NOT for everyone but it is one of my favorite TK movies TK is a complete psycho in this one. He'll either scare you away or make you love him even more.

Hey who has seen this movie?? What do you think about it? I've seen this movie. I wish I had not seen this movie. No, seriously, I liked TK in it, but I thought his co-star was some wannabe starlet/ingenue who got her part the "old fashioned way." Let's just say, not by her talent. ;D But for me, the first part (with TK) was the better part. I hated (too strong a word?) the second part, mainly because of writer/director/actor Eric Mot (?). He's soooo annoying! Karen Mok was good, but she's always really good. I thought the whole movie was really pretensious & artsy for artsy sake. I was never a fan of Eric Mot and to have to watch him for about an hour going on about how difficult it was to make this movie and to endure his schizophrenic & indecisive outtakes - ugh, it was just too much. This movie was work - and it never paid off in the end.

If you can't stand Eric Got then I guess this movie would be a pain to get through. He's in it a lot! His voice can be quite annoying at times... but I don't hate him.
I thought TK was absolutely adorable in it! He (his character) was really creepy though. Remember when he filmed his home video?! He filmed his toes and talked about his toe hair... ;D what the hell was that? that was really weird. I like that when he looked into the camera and asked "Would you marry me?" and then smiled and sorta kissed the camera.... that was freaky too. I mean if a guy sent you a home video like that in real life, you'd freak out and call the cops!!

If the guy looked with TK, I would do a freaky dance while thanking my lucky stars that I hit the jackpot, weirdo or not, I would videotape myself telling him "yes!!" & to wake me up by kissing me all over! Yeah, baby! ;D (I bet he ad libbed the marry proposing & kiss scene. That's just so Takeshi!) I did like the scenes where he's filming stuff that she missed when she was sleepwalking. Very considerate. I especially liked the scene where he's waiting for her to show up at the restuarant so they could get married. And he wait, and waits and waits. She never comes, but he doesn't leave. So sad but so dedicated. It would be creepy if he was ugly, but he's not! So, it's adorable. I don't remember the toe part that much. The whole movie was kinda weird. Hard to follow with all the skitzy editing. What did you think of the 2nd part?

Does anyone have the Mei Ah dvd version of this movie? If so, are the subtitles removable or embedded? I really want this movie because I want all his movies, but I just can't stand embedded subtitles. I have Downtown torpedos and the subtitles annoy me because I can never remove them. Anyway if it is embedded then are there any other dvd versions out there?

Regarding the Mei Ah version--which is the one I have--just checked it out for you--and the subs aren't embedded. There is a choice in the 'Menu' section whether you'd like Chinese, English or No subs at all. Hope this helps!

TK seems to shine in roles like this. He has a knack for making these characters NOT seem so irritating. Gotta agree with you Webmaster. That's why I'm thankful I was just watching a movie!

Whew!! I just finished watching this movie and it was WORK!! I mean I've never worked so hard in my life to watch a movie!! My first attempt I only got a third way thru it...the subtitles fly by you so fast so you spend a lot of time hitting "stop..rewind.. pause".But the next morning I was fresh and started all over again. I was actually able to watch the first third of the movie and not stare at the subtitles ('cause I already knew what the subtitles said) and thought "who was the costume designer? "TK in a purple tie-dyed T-shirt?.. Hmmm OK nice arms..TK in orange quilted pants??Naa... TK in a pink sweater vest?? OK. he pulls it off.. All kidding aside I agree with the Webmaster that this movie is not for everyone. I really liked it once you get past it idiosyncrasies and disjointedness. The two stories are actually thought-provoking: a story about a young man and his reaction to a nocturnal sleepwalker and how he and she handles it, and a story about love rejection and her very simple way of revenge ( and may I add very effective!)I think I appreciate the movie more in reflecting back on it, and believe you'd enjoy it more if you had the willpower to watch it a second time. TK is very endearing in the movie. He is just so open and honest with his performance. You can't help but love him more. I had a hard time watching him just waiting and waiting in the restaurant and no one showing..( I also had a hard time watching him sticking that pin in her .. repeatedly!) Karen Mok is fab. This is my first ( I think it's my first) exposure to her. I love her face she is so expressive and beautiful. She is an impressive actor. Eric Kot is just plain wacky!! I have to admit he made me lol..but he made the movie too disconnected and jumpy. Still he was funny.
I really like the theme song "Girls.. Chicky Chicky...Down..." Very Catchy"

I want to see this movie mainly for the purpose of seeing Takeshi as a garbage man.
Thanks Jadedragon for finding out about the subtitles for me. I went to the site where I usually buy Takeshi movies and they were out of First Love - Litter on the Breeze though. Dag nabbit!
