Takeshi's Antartic Adventure

Can anyone give me the scoop on this documentary? Was it good, interesting, or anything else? Does it come with English subtitles?

But was it interesting? I mean, he's out in the frozen tundra, how interesting can that get? What's there to do - where's the drama?

Well, there's a lot of TK in this show from start to finish. You see different sides of him that you don't see him in movies... he can be philosophical, lonely, silly, funny at times... but overall he appeals to be quite lonely in the show. It's a documentary after all... it can get a bit boring but if you're into TK or the Antarctica then it's very interesting. I mean seriously, it's all him... the real him all the time during the 118 minutes of the show.

I like that there's a scene where TK got drunk and he just randomly grabbed this guy (I don't know if he was American? He spoke English) and started to talk to him... that guy wanted to bust out the door you could tell from his look! It's quite funny... TK was drunk but he was friendly and talkative (probably because he was drunk).. he was like, "don't worry! We're good people! We smoke and drink but we're not bad guys!" That guy was like... "er.... yeah....". It was pretty awkward.

Then the whole crew took a little boat and landed on an iceberg or some sort of tiny island. There was a dead whale lying around. TK had a moment when he saw the corpse... it was a bit sad. He kept asking people around him "what do you think happened to it? how did it die?" on and on as if he couldn't let go of it.

Imagine being stuck on a cruise with TK for 11 days... TK and his crew were the only Asian on board. I guess none of the passengers knew how big of a star TK was... ;D But then I think he really enjoyed himself because nobody knew who he was.. no crazy fans screaming his name and stearing at him all the time. He was more relaxed. Plus, out of the 11 days of the journey he was only sober half the time anyway... hehe.


The scene I talked about:



Takeshi was very relaxed in front of the camera but that guy was kinda nervous

Their conversation:

TK: Don't worry, we're good people... even though we smoke.

(the guy entering, sitting down) guy: I gotta study.

TK: Why.. why did you want to be a doctor? You wanna save lives or you wanna make money....? You're... just.. just... interested in medical stuff...? (remember, TK was drunk)

guy (smiling, looking around, saying no to some alcohol): Uh yeah, I like biology.. and yeah work with people.

TK (opening a bag of snack or some sort): Save people?

guy (looking at TK's snack): Yeah it's a good job.

TK: What about making money?

guy: Some money... yeah.

TK: No no.. because doctor... doctors they make a lot of money.

guy (smiling, looking at TK eating the snack): They do.

*skip

guy: Why did you become an actor?

TK, mumbles: Me? Coincidence.

guy: What?

TK: Coincidence... I wanna quit.

(someone laughing in the background)

guy: You're gonna quit? (his look is funny... he's like "what the heck is going on here.. just let me go")

TK: I'm gonna quit... very soon (picks up a glass and going to take a sip)

guy: 'cause you made enough money.

TK (draws back the glass from his mouth): No.... I don't have enough money.

guy: You have more than you think...

TK (cutting in): What is enough money? (I think he's getting philosohpical.. which isn't for all occasions)

guy: To live you have enough.

someone in the background, to TK: What do you want to do (if not being actor)?

TK: Doctor.. hahha.. no I want to study. (drinking) I want to study a land... the earth... woman.. man... (now the guy looks like he wanna get the hell out of there... lol)

TK pouring more wine into the glass

guy: Anyway.. I gotta go.

TK empties the glass.

*end of their conversation




This Russian guy (crew member on the cruise) resembled Takeshi's father. When TK met him, he said, "Doesn't he look like my old man?!"







So TK was especially close to this Russian guy during the whole trip although they could barely communicate... lol.. the guy couldn't speak much English.

I saw this, and it WAS a good documentary. Atleast, I enjoyed it a lot.

You get to see antartica if you're a travel buff, but more importantly you get to see Takeshi, and how he is without acting or interviews.

i've read the extracts from TKs online diary in which he talks about his Antartica trip so it'd be really cool to piece the writing together with the visuals..

I read this thread late last night, just before i went to bed and ended up having dreams of being 'stranded' with TK on a boat amidst iceburgs for days and days, gulping down many bottles of wine..hehe
Seriously though, it sounds like such a treat for TK fans. I can't wait to see it and see such a valuable insight into the guy behind the massive, famous image. From what i've read in his diary, and from what WM has written here about this documentary, i just like the sound of him more and more He comes across as so interesting and introspective and charming *sigh*

Sorry if i'm being silly, but when WM says "I offer English translation for this show", what does that mean exactly?
Its such a bummer that the DVD doesn't have english subs but hell, i might buy it anyway to help me practise my japanese. amongst other things!

Speaking of 'TKs Antartic Adventure' and English subs, i just found this:

Thanks for the link, ElfinAniki! Also--when you purchase the Antarctic Adventure from Webmaster--she provides an accompanying text English transcript (if you choose) with it. As far as I know there has been no released version with English subs for this documentary. But, like you said--the transcripts help enormously--because, that's what I have. Take care!

I'm confused. I heard of this documentary before. But, is it a documentary that TK voiced, or is it a documentary about his trip to Antarctica?

Hey lilycat,
This is a documentary about TK's trip to Antarctica - basically it consists of film following him around and seeing what he gets up to spliced together with a few interviews with him. I watched this recently and thought that it was fantastic! [although i'm still planning on purchasing the english transcript from the WM 'cos my japanese isn't good enough to understand it all yet! ^_^ ]
If you're a TK fan, it's a must - he comes across as so thoughtful and interesting and sweet-natured *sigh* But like the WM said, he does seem a little lonely at times.

I saw a clip with bits of this documentary last week, but there was an interview in it too, so there was only small clips of the actual documentary. I sooooo wanna see the whole thing!
