I haven't seen Perhaps love but I did see the 'Fusion Express' video of it and absolutely loved that. If it has Takeshi as the star, that's got to be a giant incentive, but I'm not generally so keen on musicals. I wondered if anyone could tell me what they thought of it, or what the music was like?

it's not so much a musical, at least i don't think so....that's what seems to be alot of people's impressions when first hearing about this film. i think the director himself has stressed that in interviews also. the characters in the film are actors and it's the musical that's within the film. i'm not a big musical fan either, so i understand your slight hesitation, but i def. recommend perhaps love, especially if you're a takeshi fan.

Helena, you can read more in-depth thoughts on the movie by going to the thread in this forum and read up on it. A lot of comments have been made about "Perhaps Love" being similar like "Chicago" but I disagree. Not only that, I feel "Perhaps Love" is a complex movie that where the viewer can watch it over and over and pick up new nuances each time. In one Japanese article I read it states it well by saying the songs adds to the expression of the film, not distracting it. Some people found it a hard movie to follow so if you watch it just keep in mind it's a movie within a movie and as the film goes on, the 2 start to meld together so near the end you're not sure which "movie" you're watching. This was done on purpose by Peter Chan if you read up on some interviews articles. I recommend any TK fan to go watch this and add to his/her DVD collection as I think it shows his acting maturity.

yeah i bought it a few days ago because i just ran out of patience i thought it was really interesting, i wasn't sure what to think actually. i loved the way the two (or even three if you count the flashbacks and present day as separate) were blended together. in the end i gave up trying to distinguish them and just took it as a kind of montage

Perhaps Love is difficult to watch with subtitles because of the almost three stories/parts interwining. Alot of the facial expressions which are crucial to the movie are lost when one is busy reading subtitles. One really has to pay attention to the movie or a short :30 second shot is missed that can be very important. I have friends who do not understand Mandarin and stated a second viewing cleared up some confusing parts. I actually watched the movie a second time with a friend to translate before a scene so she was prepared and could watch the action instead of reading.

This isn't a film for everyone as it requires in my opinion multiple viewings to fully grasp all the nuances going on at once. My friend hates films like this while I find it interesting. In an age where everything is already thought out, prepackaged and shoved down the consumer's throat, this is refreshing. But then, I am biased since Takeshi-san stars in it
