So, you saw his name and before reading up on him, just by his name, would you think he's an Asian mix? Would you just think he's Japanese?

oh, good question! i've actually commented on this in another thread, i think when it was a discussion about his nationality or something. anyway, what i said then and what i still feel, is that EVEN if i had not seen his name and was ONLY judging by his face i would have thought he's japanese. now, i don't know tons and tons of asians. but i have, or have had, friends who are: chinese, thai, japanese, and filipino. i am least familiar with taiwanese. still, from the little i know i would not have thought takeshi is mixed, had i not read it. oh yes, then when i learned that he's actually MORE taiwanese (because the father is mixed, too) than japanese i was really surprised!

It just made me think. ^_^
His name is literally Japanese so I think the first thought from many is that he's 100% Japanese. I did, and that was before I read up on him.

I still remember the day I saw HOFD poster in front of video store. He made me nut just looking at him, didnt even pay attention to ZZ and Andy Lau in the poster. I quickly asked my chinese friend why Yimou cast Japanese in his movie coz his name is Japanese. My friend told me he is half taiwanese but he base in Japan now and showed me his early movies. I realized then I watched couple of his HK movies before but didnt even recognize him as the same guy in Chunky Express.
I start to search him in internet and I can see he has more and more Japanese look since he's in Japan. Specially the sideburn he has make him look more Japanese.

Well, the name is Japanese. He looks Japanese. The shape of his face, the thick eyebrows, the prominent nose, the teeth and yeah, the sideburn.
Then, I read on. Oh, his nationality is Japanese. Then, I heard his voice. His deep masculine voice sound very Japanese to me. Then, I watched his drama. The way he speaks sound right to my ears. Not sure what the rest of the Japanese people think, though. Even the way he carries himself, very Japanese.
Actually I'm not really sure about the ways of the Taiwanese. But to compare with some of their actors, TK definitely is Japanese to me.
