If I hadn't read that one particular issue of OPM (Official PlayStation Monthly), I doubt I would have gotten to know all about Takeshi Kaneshiro. If I hadn't read that he's an actor, I probably wouldn't have a crush on him, actor or no.
If I only read that Onimusha was co-created by Takeshi Kaneshiro, I would have only thought he was an up and coming designer. With that, I doubt I would have found that much info on him if he were just starting off in the gaming business.
Samanosuke Akechi, based off of Japanese actor, Takeshi Kaneshiro.
The game itself made me perk up my ears. I am a video gamer and after reading about it, I knew I was going to buy it eventually. It's set in Feudal Japan and I knew I HAD to buy it and CAPCOM created the game so I knew I was going to buy it for SURE.
Samanosuke is a gorgeous video game character as I saw but it never clicked that he was indeed modeled after Takeshi.
So, I go read up on this Takeshi fella and wow. That's when I became a rather quick fan of his.
For one thing, there's no China Town in Quebec City so there's no way for me to get any Asian films so I couldn't get any Chinese movies of his. If you have a China Town in your area, you're more than likely to find his movies better than me. Can I go to a China Town? Yes. Three hours away in Montreal. ;D
Finding "Returner" was LUCK for me. I was looking for other movies and I remembering reading about that movie with him so when I saw it, I bought it right away.
Back in the 80's (I am THAT old but not as old as some here ;D ), I used to watch "Astro Boy" and "Goldarak", two WIDELY popular anime back then. We didn't have cable so we didn't get to see that much anime.
There was an anime slump for me for over a decade and when I saw Sailor Moon, I quickly became an anime fan again, which led to me becoming a manga fan.
I've been playing video games since I was four and I knew that many that I played back then were from Japan. Considering the internet hadn't exsisted back then, I didn't know much about Japan. I now know so much more. So much that I plan on living and working there one day.
Anime and manga opened up Japan more to me. I didn't know anything about X-Japan until I saw CLAMP's "X" movie. I heard "X" and "Forever Love" and I had to know who sang them because they were amazing songs!! I go on the web and I start reading up on them and when I read about hide's (Matsumoto Hideto) death, that saddened me for I only heard about X-Japan like three-four years ago, YEARS after they disbanded and his tragic death.
I am thankful that "House of Flying Daggers" was released here in North America.
What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter when you become a fan of anything. Takeshi has had fans for YEARS. He has his old fans and his new fans. I've been an Our Lady Peace fan ever since they first released their first single, "Birdman", and I think it's great that they get new fans every year.
I am the type of fan [of anyone] who welcomes new fans with open arms.
I love Iron Maiden and guess what? They've been around since before I was born.
