I think the movie you're describing is "The Killer." THe Killer is really violent & has lots of Catholic symbolism, director John WOo is Catholic. I didn't like movie at all - too macho for me.
IMHO, Hard Boiled is one of the more enjoyable John Woo movies. I think Tony plays an undercover cop in this movie (don't quote me on this one, it's been about 10 years since I've seen it) & it has a lot more humor.
I remember a scene set in a hospital & there's a shotout in the hospital. Chow Yun Fat has to carry all the babies out to get them to safety, when he's holding one, the baby pees on him - the baby was really cute, & Chow's reaction was really cute too.
But many people believe this was Tony's break out movie. He was nominated for best supporting actor @ the HK FIlm awards & it started the ball rolling for his other great parts.
He was also in John Woo's Bullet In the Head. That was a really intense & violent movie. I would not recommend seeing it unless you must be everyone of TL's movies & you have a strong stomach. TL is great, but sometimes if a movie is so bleak, even good acting can't make you want to see it.

I remember watching Hard Boiled when I was young. It was amazing! Quite violent. I liked The Killer too. All this violence didn't bother me since I knew it was only a movie. I can handle movies but not real life violence.
These are recommended movies for any true Chow Yun Fat fans.

I just rented this movie from Netflix this past weekend. I was looking for Tony Leung flicks and came across this one with Chow Yun Fat and thought it sounded good. Tony looked really good, but it was too violent for me. The hospital scene OleWiseOne refers to went on forever and Chow Yun Fat put cotton in the baby's ears and while holding the baby kept firing - even the baby got splattered with blood. That was pretty shocking.
As a matter of fact it was a TL weekend - I also saw A Chinese Ghost Story III and Flowers of Shanghi. I think to date my favorite TL movies are Hero and CE.
