Reminder to those in Canada & the US that Spike TV will be showing HOFD Tuesday evening. This will likely generate more interest in TK so there may be increased traffic to this website. Not really. Spike aired the movie before and the site didn't get heavy traffic. |

YesAsia has a DVD with just the Making of...Chinese, no subs but worth watching...about 2 hours long or so...it's quite cheap but I read too that it's not allowed to export to the US...
Update....the Chinese version is sold out...but a Japanese Edition of that making of is still available...19,95 USD...no shipping to the US though

my cinxxx you are so very articulate on the subject of HOFD. and you've kept it mostly clean  must be the good librarian genes. i agree that tk is just awesome in it. i also agree that maybe its partially modesty that makes him so private? he doesn't want to rub his intense prettyness/handsomeness/hotness (select preferred) in the other men's faces  going back to the dagger throwing of mei, that was so confusing. i can't help thinking, did zhang yimou half want people to have an ambiguous ending? because it was so hard to understand, and there are so many theories. Which is why you should listen to the director explain (even to Ziyi) about the ending. I agree with the director that most Westerners may not catch the significance of the dagger being thrown since it tends to be something is a more common theme in Asian films. |

Spike has just showed the movie (the feed goes through Toronto so they only air it here at a later time) and I.. can't watch it in English.
Takeshi's voice is so deep that his English voice over just does not work.
Oh, I'll put the caption on but the thought of hearing his English voice over.. just doesn't make sense with how DEEP that man's voice is.

The film was unwatchable in English for a number of reasons. The voices didn't match the actors (the voice for TK sounded like a young man just finishing puberty; plus it sounded like the same voice for Andy Lau!) and the delivery was flat, almost like they were reading the phone book.
Better to purchase the DVD with subtitles. It was sold recently in North America as a package w/ Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I saw it in French and his French voice over is way better than his English one.
I usually watch my DVD in the original.. Chinese (if I remember correctly. I know I saw Hero [Jet Li] in Mandarin and I usually watch that one in its original format).
And in French, they keep the songs in their original format.

As far as I know other countries version contain the same short Making Of (Korea may be an exception). The DVD I mentioned is a Special DVD released in China and Japan only called "The flower" or "Just like flowers"... Tx.[/quote] ok this is a transcript i've made of the commentary i have. it may not be perfect but it gets the point across. It is said by Zhang Yimou, addressing Zhang Ziyi (as "you"). enjoy: You know, right up until the end we weren't sure where we wanted your dagger to fly. I finally decided on this: by pulling out your dagger, you didn't necessarily want to kill Andy Lau. It was to block Andy's dagger. We purposefully didn't show his dagger. Non one knows what direction your dagger is flying. Everyone thinks that Andy's dagger has been thrown... but now we discover that it actually wasn't. Everyone thought it went out; but nobody made a move at all. Andy didn't throw the dagger: just a drop of blood. Your dagger doesn't kill Andy. It wasn't meant to kill him - it was for blocking his dagger. So later people asked why did Andy Lau force you to throw your dagger? My explanation was that he was hoping your dagger would kill him. His reasoning was "I know you don't love me, and I've hurt you. So I'd rather you kill me.! Because you say "If you kill him [Takeshi], I'll kill you!" But you didn't even have the heart or the desire to kill him - you only wanted to save Takeshi. I hope that helps. If you watch that scene with this in hand it will make a lot more sense =] |

Helena, that was exactly what I got from Zimou's explanation of that dagger scene. I think it makes perfect sense. Mei did not want to kill Leo. Leo wanted her to. Mei wanted to save Jin. Jin just looks beautiful. Everybody dies.  |
