theres no perfect life. only perfect moments.
if you get to judge the film as a whole... well oh well... hehe...
but then i thought of a solution so i cud appreciate it better..
i cut the film into "moments", so even if i didint appraciate the fim as a whole... i wud still enjoy some scenes that were quite fantastic.
hehehe.
my interpretation of the ending is that.. andy wanted mei and him to die, leaving jin alone and unhappy.
but then instead of throwing the dagger to andy, mei opted to save jins life by throwing the dagger in the trajectory that andy's dagger shud have followed(thus, drip of the blood that touched meis dagger in mid-air, the one in slow motion)
mei's action insulted andy coz he knew that jins life is more important to mei.
i didint make sense did i? hehehehe.

Okay, here goes my take on the ending: Andy Lau's character only pretended to throw the dagger because by doing so he was (1) testing Mei to see if she would really tear out the dagger (remember, by keeping the dagger inside she still has a chance to live , thus Jin's plea for Mei not to take out the dagger) to save Jin's life, or she might not throw it to save her own life; and (2) also testing to see if Mei would throw the dagger at Lau, as she threatened she would, in which case he'd rather die at the hands of Mei than to go on living, but if she didn't, then that would prove that she still loved Lau (or her own life more) and couldn't go through with killing him.
Of course, Mei's plan all along was to save Jin's life, not really to kill Lau (remember, he saved her life many times, and she feels indebted to him). So when she thought he threw the dagger at Jin, she threw hers in order to intercept the dagger directed at Jin (thus the drop of blood intersecting with the dagger).
After this, you can see, by seeing the expression on Lau's face, that she truly loved Jin enough to give up her own life to save Jin's, and still loved (perhaps out of obligation and gratefulness for all the times he's saved her life) Lau enough that she wasn't willing to throw the dagger at him and kill him.
That's why you see Lau not running towards Mei, as Jin does, because he finally sees that they loved each other enough to sacfice their own life for one another, and leaves the lovers to mourn their loss and say their final good-byes.

I have already purchased the DVD that shows the version shown in Asia, and not in America, and so I get to see the parts the American version cut out.

THEY SAY HoFD WASNT TOO GREAT A FILM. I, ON THE OTHER HAND THOUGHT IT ROCKED. I STILL CAN DECIDE IF IT WAS COZ OF TAKESH. GUESS ILL NEVER KNOW... HEHE.
IMO, Daggers revisited. hahaha! sorry i dont have anything to do at 1 AM. insomniac here.
i read in this forum by kimurafan (its a great site!), something like zhang yimous "other script" where takeshi was supposed to be an emperors son, ziyi being an assassin who was supposed to kills takeshis father. (i really dont know the whole thing)
though similar to house of flying daggers, this could have been a greater story IMO coz its takeshis father thats on the line, loyalty to ones family is far more binding IMO than loyalty to ones country. so the dilemma cud have been more dramatic for the emperors son.
you know flirting and falling in love with the assassin and risking your OWN fathers life in the process. unlike in daggers, it isnt easy to QUIT on ur own family just like that once u realized uv fallen in love with the enemy right? hehe.
and in the first place, takeshi would have been great being the emperors son (does anyone know the term for emperors son, its kind of awkward calling him a prince LOL). he lookes quite IMPERIAL in every way.
...
i cud imagine him being one of chinas royalty. a drop dead gorgeous playboy and drunken jerk who relies on his familys enormous wealth to get whatever he wants. much more loathesome than jin. i just find him sexiest in this kind of role. naughty, lusty, bad-as-i-wanna be type of character.
having all the women and a throng of pretty aristocrats try to snag him for a husband. but this time with fuller close ups on that utterly absurd prettiness. more close up on those mischievous eyes. looking lustily at every girl. let him be a jerk oh please.
he struts in the finest period costumes, practicing archery and swordfighting and doing the "naughtiest things" men of power would do without any guilt.
he is adored by women and envied (and despised) by men. all that arrogance in his character.
...
him running away from the palace upon seeing this lovely commoner who seemed unaware of his identity. rejects him in a way. sparks fly and mischief takes over.
(like prince and me, chasing liberty, last samurai cross with house of flying daggers? LOL. LOL. truth is, there are some scenes in some i wud have liked takeshi to do. this post is just an excuse to free my imagination. hehe)
he wears dirty torn-out clothes, still in a ridiculously model-like kind of way.
his initial plan... getting laid with a commoner girl sounds pretty exciting. and pretty challenging to since the girl is as conservative and as snobbish as an 80-year old shrew.
the girl teaches him the commoner ways. pretty rusty plot but i wud kill for takeshi to do that role. i just love naughty takeshi.
him having the hardest and most awkward time doing chores. that shud be adorable by my standards.
there shud be a part where his face has a full close up while watching the girl bathe. and the naughty eyes... oh ladies! we missed that in daggers.
u decide where u insert the lovely fight scenes!
...
i think there shud also be flirty scenes using martial arts, like takeshi teaching the girl some hot "fight" positions. LOL. like having a fight scene with swords and all, mere making it an excuse to rub each other. LOL
i wud also like scene with takeshi shedding off some clothes. like in daggers, he wud be injured then the girl will mend his wounds... cant loook at takeshi directly.. and takeshi flashing a naughty smile. EEEEEEEEEEE!
no post-coital scenes on this one. i think takeshi would be better in "not-so-passionate" scenes in flying daggers like they they were run after by a speeding train.
i wud really appreciate it if TK wud have done loves scenes like the one in meet joe black. it was passionate yes, but the audience wud not mistake lust for love.
maybe thats why i liked the kissing part in the end coz it was slow, i had to suspend my breathing until it was over.
nonetheless, an "almost" love scene shud be done. vey much unlike hollywood. LOL.
...
i guess the best part would be knowing that the girl was just using him to kill as tool to actually kill his father.. and being so devastated and so angry with the betrayal. now that he has fallen in love of all times!
the girl falls in love with him too. says sorry. but hes just too hurt to even listen. he almost hits her... then leaves.
i can see it right now.
seeing her again for the first time, after knowing about the betrayal.
the girl in her knees in front of the emperor and his men, in the most pitiful of situations. then takeshi, showing that oh so adorable face... still angry with the girl and wanted to crush her with his bare hands.
she is harrassed by the emperors men in front of him. he feels pretty much a handful of emotions at that very moment. anger, love, loathe, pity, despise and.. jealousy.
the mere sight of this girl that he loves and respects, being touched by filthy hands is just killing him...
his eyes and the whole of takeshis facial expression wud certainly nail this one. dilemma, dilemma, dilemma. conflict within.
he cud not stand being made for a fool by this girl. and he wants her to go to hell.
but then at the last moment... lovingly (and i mean lovingly with tightly closed eyes, as if saying, "oh what the hell! i love her!) embraces her in front of everyone then kisses her forehead or whatever, at the fury of his father.
did i just make a soap opera there? its more like a soap opera than a wuxia firlm. hahahaha. im going to bed now. so much for crazy me. hahahahaha.

About the ending: Leo throws, because he knows Mei would die, and he too, so they would die together. Mei throws but no to kill Leo, but to stop Leo's Dagger and to protect Jin. Leo doesn't throw his Dagger, but with the movement a drop of blood comes out instead. That's why Mei's Dagger just meets this blood drop on the air and finally crushes into a tree. OMG! This movie is just so beatiful!!! But my favorite scene is when Mei releases Jin from the ropes and he turns around and look at her.... it is impossible not to melt !!! that look on his eyes....... WOW!!!! love m_j

Just something else. The BAFTAs (British Academy Awards) were given away last saturday. HOFD was nominated in 9 categories including best foreign film. He won NONE awards. I find it completely unfair. As I said on Kinurafan Forum: This Award-circus just sucks! love, m_j

Needless to say, I was envious of Zhang as she went down on him. It's funny how she couldn't touch his face but yet, she could "examine" him below the belt.

Needless to say, I was envious of Zhang as she went down on him. It's funny how she couldn't touch his face but yet, she could "examine" him below the belt. the look on his/jin's face when she went "south" was hysterical. i loved that. he just kept talking, like a kid would babble b/c he's nervous.
now, i don't know a WHOLE bunch about asian culture, so was there a reason why she couldn't touch his face but she could feel up his thighs and whatnot? i forgot to ask my chinese friend about that.
