Under new Executive Director Graham Leggat, the festival again presents a schedule that's heavy on foreign films, documentaries, shorts and work by young directors. Hollywood releases are virtually ignored. The directing award will be presented to Germany's Werner Herzog (``Nosferatu,'' ``Fitzcarraldo,'' ``Grizzly Man''), whose recent ``The Wild Blue Yonder'' will be screened at the event. The festival also will honor actor Ed Harris (``The Right Stuff,'' ``Pollock'') at a showing of his 1984 ``A Flash of Green.'' The screenwriting award goes to France's Jean-Claude Carriere, who will attend a screening of his 1967 classic ``Belle de Jour,'' starring Catherine Deneuve. ``We're particularly pleased with the mix of people for the awards,'' Leggat said at a press conference. The festival opens with a Chinese musical, ``Perhaps Love,'' set in Beijing and Shanghai and directed by Hong Kong's Peter Ho- Sun Chan. It closes with Robert Altman's ``A Prairie Home Companion,'' starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson and Lindsay Lohan. In between are more than a dozen daily screenings at two main San Francisco theaters, plus seven ``satellite venues'' in the city and two in nearby Berkeley and Palo Alto. A total of 41 countries are represented in this year's schedule. Features, Documentaries High-profile features include ``Romance & Cigarettes,'' a musical melodrama directed by actor John Turturro and starring James Gandolfini (``The Sopranos''), Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet and Steve Buscemi. Among the full-length documentaries are ``Al Franken: God Spoke,'' a profile of the comedian on a book tour in 2004, and ``The Bridge,'' a study of the Golden Gate Bridge and its dubious distinction as the world's most popular suicide destination. Many screenings are organized into thematic series, including 22 first or second films by emerging directors, half of whom are in competition for an annual prize. Another series includes 22 feature-length documentaries, half in competition for the festival's Golden Gate Awards. Other miniseries focus on Indian and Asian films, family movies and silent classics. In addition to the screenings, parties and panel discussions, actress Tilda Swinton (``Orlando,'' ``The Chronicles of Narnia'') will deliver an April 29 speech on ``The State of Cinema.'' The directing, acting and screenwriting awards will be presented at a fundraising dinner at the St. Francis Hotel on April 27. Most screenings will be held at the Kabuki 8 multiplex at 1881 Post St. in San Francisco. Others, including opening and closing nights and the tributes to Herzog and Harris, will take place at the ornate Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St. Outside the city, the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley and the Aquarius Theatre in Palo Alto will show a selection of festival films. www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000088&sid=adnjdJj24_I8&refer=cultureWHAT: The 49th San Francisco International Film Festival • WHEN: April 20-May 4 • WHERE: The AMC Kabuki 8, 1881 Post St., S.F.; the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro, S.F.; the UC Berkeley Pacific Film Archives, 2575 Bancroft Way, Berkeley; Landmark's Aquarius, 430 Emerson St., Palo Alto • HOW MUCH: $7.50-$11; price is higher for special presentations, along with opening- and closing-night film and parties. As I understand it, it's considered a derogatory term. Just like you don't call people from Oklahoma "Okies", you don't call people from San Francisco "Friscos".

Hello Kewpie-chan. . .i tried to find out info on purchasing tix and it seems quite pricey. . . $75 per ticket for non-members. . .because the showing is on opening nite and theres some kind of party invovled. I tried to see if tickets could be sold at a discount for just the movie showing, but thats not possible. I dont know if its in my budget to pay this much to watch a movie! What do u think?

You can buy just the tix for the film halohalo. I believe it costs $11.00. I hate the SFIFF's website...doesn't make sense on finding information! The tix goes on sale tomorrow to gen public & you can buy it online, fax or in person at the box office. It LOOKS like the main box office is the Kabuki theater but when you try to go to AMC website THERE IS NO INFORMATION. And there's no phone # you can call on SFIFF website Yes, the price of $75 is steep but that's including everything (film, party, food/drink, entertainment and gift bag). I was seriously considering the $125 package ONLY cuz you get into the VIP celebrity lounge. But without any info confirming if cast/crew of "Perhaps Love" will be there, I hesitate to purchase it. But I will get the $75.00 one If you'd like to "chat" more about this, send me a message outside this forum. If you click on my name. will shoot you to my members info page and you'll see my email address. Hope you can make it! Be nice to meet a fellow TK fan to watch the movie with

If you've never been to any opening or closing night events, I say you should at least once. 'Course this is sort of an off/on "hobby" of mine so I am a bit biased ;D And no, I'm not talking about in a crazed groupie sense LOL! I've been in films myself (as extra, nothing more) so I'm curious to see how the atmosphere of an international film soiree is compared to hollywood and independent soirees.

kewpie-chan, so you've been to other premieres and film festivals before then? lucky that you get to do things like this quite often. too bad i'm not living down there yet (my family lives 2 1/2 hours away from the bay area), i'd def. be there, even though tk won't be there, i'd want to be there to see the movie on the big screen.
i hope halohalo can make it so you to can meet and watch to movie together. i was able to do that same thing (meeting some forum members and meeting our idol) this past weekend and i had a blast. i won't go into it here, it has nothing to do with tk, but i'll post a thread in the random section....and i have pics too!!
