GOLDEN BALL (or GOLDEN BOWL)

Synopsis: Heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro stars as Akutagawa, a securities analyst who relieves the stress of sitting at a computer screen all day with nightly sessions at the local bowling alley. The young salaryman is so good, in fact, that the alley's elderly owner tells him he's pro material and bequeaths him his own "golden ball," since he won't need it anymore. It turns out a local developer is trying to convince the owner to sell the bowling alley, whose business has never been the same since the end of Japan's huge "bowling boom" of the late '60s and early '70s. The developer wants to tear it down and build a love hotel. Of course, the longtime employees of the alley, as well as the manager of the planetarium that's located on the roof and a former pro who frequents the establishment, oppose the sale and try to convince the owner not to cave in. The developer comes up with an idea: He and the owner will bowl for the building. There is also a romantic subplot involving an upper-middle-class housewife (Hitomi Kuroki) who uses the same locker that Akutagawa does, but in the daytime. Taken from: osakawaters.netfirms.com

This is a fun show to watch. I like how Takeshi paired up with Hitomi (even though she was older...)
TK and bowling... how can you miss it?!
Dilbar bowls like a MF with the highest score of 209. Now that's something.
My personal highest score is probably 201.... I can hit a "bye-bye splito" baby! (you know what that is if you've seen the show)
BTW, our scores are the sum of 12 games.

I love this comedy/drama of Takeshi's. It shows his verstility as an actor--going from an ultra serious/macho man/stone cold type of anti-hero in Sleepless Town (which I highly recommend for viewing)--to a lovable kinda hottie looking nerd (the only way I can describe him in this show)! His varied facial expressions( the comical ones) made me laugh so much throughout the series, and I love the kind of man he portrayed in this film--so sweet and caring, very considerate of others' feelings, with a high level of integrity--a real drool factor for the ladies! Bottomline is--this series is a definite 'need to see'!

Yeah, Golden Bowl is pretty good. Hitomi Kuroki and TK look natural together, nothing awkward, even though they're years apart.
The only flaw (or the only flaw that I could think of right now) was Hinano Yoshikawa, the girl who played TK's ex-girlfriend. From the way TK acted in the drama you would guess that his ex must be really good, mesmerizing... someone who has characters you know. But no! It was Hinano Yoshikawa! The teenage-looking cutie girl who spoke with a little-girl-like voice! She looked more like TK's little sis or cousin than an ex-girlfriend who left a scar in his heart. Just not convincing. She and TK didn't seem to have chemistry either.
I personally think that someone like Kou Shibasaki could've played the role much better than Hinano (not that she isn't cute. she is but she doesn't seem like a choice for her role in this particular drama) But then of course... Kou is a strong character. If she really was in Golden Bowl it would be entirely different. Plus she is one of the highest paid actresses in Japan right now. Golden Bowl probably wouldn't be big enough for her... ;D

The only flaw (or the only flaw that I could think of right now) was Hinano Yoshikawa, the girl who played TK's ex-girlfriend. From the way TK acted in the drama you would guess that his ex must be really good, mesmerizing... Agree. Also the scenes of every visit by the challenger was quite boring after a few episodes and rather silly. Other than that... :)Yo! What an enjoyable series. Wah! What a beautiful, beautiful man. 8-)I was gaping at his beauty and at the same time laughing at his antics. Oh, my dear Aniki Jin, you never stop to amaze me with your acting range. And your eyes, how could a pair of dark brown eyes be so lovely? Soft, shiny, sparkling, teasing, laughing, determine, dreamy, sad, just lovely... They made me forget Brad's laughing blue and Aragon's intense pairs. Though I think that Hitomi's not beautiful enough for him, but they made a good pair. I like their dialogues, pretty forward. I notice this in some Jap dramas. The other day, I happened to watch one on tv with Takuya in it. He had an argument with this girl and she ran up the steps. He was standing at the bottom and shouted at her something like 'I could see it'. The girls shouted something in return and he said, 'I mean your panty' with a straight face. Ha! Ha! I laughed out loud. Now back to Bowling, I think the 'mistress' was really pretty and sexy. But Takeshi's expression upon seeing her breast should not be of utter delight. He should be shocked or in awe or dumbfounded. Anyway, after watching the whole series in a single day, I suffered many days and nights full with his images. Just talking about this make me want to have another go.

I agree with you guys about the person they chose to play his ex-girlfriend. Her voice kind of annoyed me. lol. This is definately one of his more lighter roles....as in comedy type and not too serious.

Hello, Many of the songs in Golden Bowl are by Paul Anka. I believe that they are originals with him singing. The song you are referring to is called "Diana". If you look up a discography of his you will see it. I really liked this series. It had great dialogue and kept me guessing about what the underlying meanings were. I actually think it is better written than "God Please Give Me More Time".

Okay, I have not seen this drama and after reading the posts here I have to say I am intrigued. Somehow I cannot picture TK as a bowler. Does he actually bowl? I like to bowl but I am lucky to break 100.
Also, when were the shows on and how long did it run?

Hey mshman! I was very intrigued by this J-drama before I saw it for the same reasons you mentioned. The drama consist of 11 episodes that are about 45 minutes in length and I believe it was broadcast in 2002. This series affords the viewer the opportunity to see TK's awesome range as an actor. I don't know how much of a bowler TK is, but he actually showed some pretty good form in the show. And yeah, if I bowl 100, then I've had a very good game.

Thanks for the info. Now where can I get my hands on this. This is just too good to pass up. Bowling, who would have thought? Well, I guess he does go for the more interesting roles. What a guy!
