What language do you like listening from Takeshi?

I prefer him speaking in Japanese, that's why I prefer that he takes more japanese project than chinese.

I love hearing his voice from Returner, Golden Bowl, ninnesen no koi, and kamisama. he possess a sexy deep voice, and speaking japanese is a plus, since japanese language was deep than chinese.

Japanese, mandarin, catonese- whatever language he spoke in the film. I like to here his voice( nice timber to his voice), and I just read the subtitles in english. I've tried the films with it dubbed and it's just not the same -I don't like it. The dubbed voices aren't anywhere as nice as TK's voice.

Yes!! I couldn't agree with you more. Dubbed movies are the bane of my existence (ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point).

I can't stand them across the board--not just with TK's movies. The voiceover talent they use can never get the inflection right. Mainly because the primary goal seems to be to match the timing of the actor's lip movement.

I am a chinese, as far as I know, the language he is best at is Mandarin, which is no surprise, he had lived in Taiwan for the major part of his life anyway.

But I do have a question for you, I have watched his Japanse episode "God, please give me more time", his Japanse sounded pretty fluent to me. BUt I am no native speaker, can you tell me whether he is good at Japanse, can you tell whether he has an accent or not? Thanks!

OK, well I heard him in House of Daggers and kamisama..., and in an English interview.
I love the Japanese language and when TK speaks Japanese I think it's really sexy , with a very low voice !! When he speaks English he sounds adorably cute
But I'd love to hear him in French, might have to do with me being French lol

First off: A big welcome to you here, Vanessa! May you enjoy this haven of TK fandomania! LOL! I think you'll find folks here to be fun and welcoming overall.

I'd love to hear TK speak French too, as it is such a beautiful language (which I can speak only the tiniest bit of). However, I think TK sounds great talking in whatever language, though I believe I already said that here a ways back. His deep voice is *very* sexy. As far as I'm concerned, he could use it to sell Kleenex and I'd want to tape the ad just to hear him speak.

I know it's not a lot, but I do believe he said "Oui madame," in "Golden Bowl." Hope my memory isn't failing me (help me out you fellow TK-philes if I've got this wrong!).

It did take me some time to find an English speaking forum, so I am happy to be here!
Unfortunately I have seen TK only in house of flying daggers first then kamisama .... that is all, but I am already under the charm. Just to say I have not seen golden bowl .

I have no particular preference. Since I read the subtitles in english anyway, I always have the sound in his original deep voice, may it be cantonese or mandrian. I have yet to see his J-dramas. But, I learned from the postings here that english subtitles are not available with the J-dramas.
I saw Turn Right Turn Left with no english subtitles and had to have someone translate sentence by sentence back to me. It was a tedious and discouraged my repeating viewings. So, I havn't purchased them.
I was also disappointed to learn that he was dubbed in HOFD. Zhang Yimou thought he sounds too Taiwanese. I saw one of his earlier Taiwanese film( I think), Forever Friends, a few days ago and was so...disappointed to hear his voice dubbed. The voice they had coming out of TK's mouth was high and shrill. At least in HOFD, the director used someone who has a similar voice to TK.
And, in his interview w/ BBC, he sounded very sexy in english! And, I havn't seen Too Tired To Die.
Still... I'd say he is ready for his close up, Hollywood!

Yes--it's too bad quite a few of Takeshi's earlier films were dubbed--I can't for the life of me --wonder at the reason for this???!! He's got one awesome voice--and for the producers or powers-that-be who makes these movies to replace it with a very non-descript type of voice that is nowhere near Tk's voice is bordering on sacrilegeous!! Yes--he may have certain accents with certain languages--but, I think it adds to the charm of the language/dialect and in no way harm the integrity of the movie. A double 'Boo' to all those movie directors, or whoever is responsible for replacing TK's heavenly, too-die-for voice! ;D

I don't know much about asian film world to make any dissecting. But, an asian man with a deep... voice is a rarity. Much more so when that person looks as good as TK does even before his eyelid surgery. Since the studios need to dubbed every film in different dialect for distribution, why not dubbed his mandrian as well might be their thinking.

Here in America, the "acceptable" midwestern accent is what most actors tries to emulate. Renee Zellweigger, a texan, Jennifer Garner, a W. virginian, camouflaged their accents so well that you can't tell they are southerners. One loses one's individuality by conforming to the acceptable norm, but that also opens many doors. I read recently that Zhang Ziyi learned to speak english with a japanese accent for her role in Memoire of a Geisha. I don't know what the outcome is but that's dedication!
